congrats! He is very handsome. They love their bells, don't they? Pretty soon you'll hear a THUNK! and realize franklin has removed the offending the clapper

Thanks! He's settled in really well :)

I'm a little worried though...it's bedtime now, and he seems to want to fall asleep on the front of the cage. He's holding on with one foot and the tip of his bill. I tried to target him down to a perch, and he came willingly, but then just climbed back up again into this weird sleeping position.

Do you think he'll be okay? Does anyone else have parrots that do this? I'm worried he might fall in the night, but I guess there's not really much I can do about it, though I could put a towel folded up on the bottom of the cage. Thoughts??

I had a customer at the pet store whose green cheek did the same thing! We puzzled over it and could not figure out why he did it. If yours does it too, I wonder if it is a green cheek thing?

I expect he'll be fine. You might want to get him some kind of tent or box... Green Cheeks have a propensity to like to sleep lying on their backs, and in the wild they are cavity nesters and sleep in the nest all the time, not just when breeding. Scooter has a tent thing and he always sleeps in it at night. YMMV

Oh and don't be surprised if you get a case of temporary paranoia. I'd done enough reading before we got scooter that I was sure he was dead at least four times a day for the first couple of weeks!

It must be a GCC thing then, that's good to hear! He seems fine this morning, and is being very busy, rooting through his food to eat all the dried apple bits, and is exploring his toys more too. I'm heading off to work shortly, but I'll pop home at lunch to visit with him again!

Thanks for the tip about the tent, I saw them at the store yesterday, so I'll go back and get him one. I totally have new mom paranoia. At least he hasn't played dead yet, and knowing that they do that from time to time helps!

A lot of birds do enjoy the tents, but be careful with them. There have been lots of cases of birds getting tangled up in loose threads and strangling themselves, and they can also become very territorial and aggressive if they have a "nest" to protect. I had one for my Quaker but I eventually took it out of her cage because she was becoming extremely protective of it.
