My grandma has 30 birds

Postby Waffles » Sat Aug 19, 2017 10:46 am

So, In mexico, my grandma has up to 30 birds in cages! 2 of which are bluefront amazons, I was told that they are never let out of their cages but I think they should either be adopted by people who actually care for birds and don't always keep them in cages!

what should i do in this situation? what would you do?

sincerely, a very sad bird lover

Talk to her and you may get through. You can also put her in this forum. There is a lot of work involved with cleaning 30 cages and feeding and watering the birds. Tell her there are people who would love them and give them more than she can.

It's hard for old people to change... I must be of the same age of your grandmother and, when I was a child, people thought nothing of keeping birds in cages all the time. It was not considered cruelty in any way - it was just the way things were done back then along with other things we now consider inhumane.

If you live close to her, you could try taming the birds so they can come out a bit but, if you are far away, there is really not much you can do because I doubt that telling her to give up her birds is going to work.

Try to get her in the forum to see how these birds should be cared for. In the mean time play on the amount of work they cause and that she could find homes for them as part of a family.

Since I have no grandchildren I forget that I am not only grandmom age but also great grandmom age. It is weerd to think of that. I know there will come a time that I will not be able to care for my Cockatiels. If they were not in a flock I , ould not be able to handle so many cages. I count mine as one FLOCK when someone says I have too many.

I have a primary care doctor that I have only seen twice. He has a Cockatiel and loves the little being but never thought of getting him a friend. I think I am going to offer him Louise. The rest of the flock, I am guessing, between 6 and 17 years old. Her only bond is with Phoenix who took over as Nanny when the mother and grandmother abandoned her.

Liz, I doubt an old Mexican grandmother who, most likely, doesn't speak English, will agree to joining a birdsite. I hope I am wrong but I doubt it...

Do you know for a fact that the doctor has a male? And, before you give him Louise do make sure he takes good care of the one he has because lots and lots and lots of people say they love animals but that doesn't mean they actually do or that they take good care of them. I am involved with a proposal of law for New Jersey banning declawing for cats [mutilation that is both barbaric and cruel!] and was sent a story yesterday of a woman who calls herself not only an animal lover but an animal rights person who had had her kinkajou all four paws declawed! How can you call yourself an animal lover and a believer of animals right and do such a terrible, terrible thing to a poor, defenseless animal? Can you imagine the stress this poor thing is going to live under for the rest of its life? Kinkajous are arboreal animals and they need their claws to climb but they have doomed this one to the ground and, most likely, to chronic pain! People really have no idea what it means to love an animal... They think that wanting to own one is love and, if they have to torture the poor thing so it's easier for them to keep it, they go ahead and do it!

He is the first male doctor, other than specialists, that I have had for many years. Since I do not do well with male doctors we end up filing the time about our cockatiels. He had his singing male in a small cage but got a flight cage for him after my first visit. I had to give him info on what to feed him since he had no pattern set up. He listened to me and made changes.

I gave a cockatiel, who was abusing his mate, to a friend of mine. He agreed if it did not work out or if he did not have enough time for him that he would give him back. He brought Curley back. He said the arrangement of putting in food and getting bit was not working out and he brought him back.

I would have the same arrangement with the doctor. I have not contacted him yet and am still trying to decide if I should give her up.

I am sure you will make the right decision because I know you love your birds. Me, I am SOOOOO picky that it's almost impossible for me to find good homes for birds... It took me months and months and months to find a good home for Pookey but, thankfully, I did and she is doing wonderfully in her new home -but I must have gone through a hundred people replying to my ads in CL!

When I could not find a home for Columbus (he was causing trouble in the flock) I took him to my last employer who owned a Southern States farm store.

The store had a pet section that very few knew about. I told the owner that he would advertise that section of the store. He did his job and sang all the time and increased his sales.
The rule was that he could not be sold. If they could not care for him he would return to me.

That was years ago. The last time I went to the store the first thing I heard was little Columbus singing.
