cinnamon sticks?

Postby Giantmoa » Wed Jul 14, 2010 6:32 pm

I came across some in my cupboard and wondered if my bird would enjoy chewing one... I haven't found any info on whether cinnamon is good or bad though, so any thoughts on it? thanks

I've given them to mine and they like them. They end up smelling like cookies!

Cinnamon is one of Scarlet's favorite toys/treats. I also use it as a chew toy when Jake gets nippy on my arm/head/shoulder.

Thats very good to know! They sell cinnamon stick as large as perches down at the living room decorating store thing (I have no idea what you call those stores). I was thinking of buying some but didnt know wether that would be a bad idea.
How much can they have?

I give them whole sticks and they just gnaw on it for a while until they're tired of it. I don't know if you have to get a certain kind or if all cinnamon is the same. I used to get a bird seed mix that had whole cinnamon sticks in it.

i'd try to make sure what you're getting is "organic." granted a little chemical here and there probably won't hurt. but cinnamon is the bark of a tree, so whatever they spray the tree with will certainly carry the pesticide in good quantity.

So its the bark, good to know. They looked like sheats that were rolled up. I was in there to look for java trees. They sell them as decoration for a much cheaper price then when you buy them at pet stores, while the quality is the same.
Anyway, I was there asking for the trees and the owner looked me up and down, put his nose in the air and asked me with a faint disgusted voice: "oh, you own a parrot or something? Right..."

Funny people...

yes, it's amazing the deals you can get as soon as something is not labeled for parrot use only! but it can be tricky making sure something is truly bird safe. for example, you can get perfectly good wicker baskets from dollar stores to allow your flock to chew on for fun. the caveat is making sure there's no chemical "finish" sprayed on it. like it or not, modern society has become awash in all sorts of chemicals. :?
