Hi Everybody! New guy here.

Postby Callmestu » Tue May 15, 2018 3:05 pm

While I am new to these forum things I have had two Amazon parrots since 1997. Unfortunately my dear Taco got sick and passed away in 2017 but I still have my darling little Barnie. She is the love of my life. I have been in the hospital for a very long time now and I am very lucky that the vet she is boarding with brings her to see me once in a while. I am eager to see what other bird owners are doing and saying.

I just got an almost 2 yr old African Grey named Ruby. Any ideas on how to bond with her. I know it takes time. She was with one owner & he loved her but knew he no longer has time to spwns with her. She is really sweet but scared so she tries to bite when I need her to step up. I dont want to push her but I'm afraid that if I don't handle her she will get mean. I've only had her since Sun. I just want to get off to the best possible start.

Welcome to the forum! I am afraid that you are going about it the wrong way. Parrots, just like people, don't like it when strangers [which is what you are and will be for the next week or so] take familiarities with them so, please, stop asking her to step up because this is counterproductive and might teach her that biting you is OK.

Just let her come out of her cage if she wants [open the door and walk away] and spend as much time as you can [but it needs to be, at least, 3 hours during the day -never at night] in the same room with her. Talk, sing, whistle, dance, etc and, every now and then, offer her a treat from your fingers BUT if she doesn't take it, just leave it where she can reach it because this is not a reward for something done well, it's a gift from you to her, a token to show her that you want to be her friend. Once you see that she is eager for your company and wants to take your relationship one step further, you can start asking her to step up BUT if she doesn't want to do it, don't insist. You cannot force or browbeat a parrot into loving you, you need to win it over.
