Artichokes

Postby GreenWing » Wed Oct 31, 2018 6:25 pm

Chance loves a cooked leaf of artichoke. Artichokes are packed full of vitamins and minerals.

Does your bird like artichokes?

Artichokes are $2 each here so I have not tried them on it. I am trying to grow my own. What part of the artichoke do you feed him?

My birds get them regularly mixed in the gloop because they are so good for the liver - but I get the frozen centers, not the actual artichokes -too expensive for all my birds and there would be lots of them that would not eat them [all the passerines, the quails and the little aviary species]. But I get them for myself and the daughter that lives nearby because we are the only ones that like a sauce I make with them for spaghetti.

I have only way my Grandmother made them were stuffed or pickled. I will try them in spaghetti. Artichokes, like grapes, cost so much. Grape prices are down right now so I get some too. When they are over three dollars I just buy a sprig of them for my birds. They eat better than me.

I get grapes even when they are expensive because it's one of the few fruits my husband eats. The sauce for spaghetti is made with heavy cream and cheese, too.

Now that I have a puppy, my birds don’t get grapes. They throw them and I guess they’re really bad for dogs. Seems strange that something as innocent as a grape could hurt an animal.

Congrats on the puppy! How wonderful for you! Now you need to get a second one to make 'things' perfect  We know for a fact that grapes and anything made out of them can put a dog in renal failure [many - MANY - documented cases] but the funny thing is they still don't know what it is in grapes that does it - isn't that something?!

I have dogs and I feed my birds grapes regularly. What I do is keep the dogs in the kitchen until the birds go back into their cages and pick up any that fell down before I release them. It has worked very well for many years. The only 'hard' part is when I am cleaning the produce in the kitchen and the naughty ones steal a grape from me because I have to watch them like a hawk so, when they finally throw it on the floor, I am there to pick it up [after running like a maniac screaming: "DON'T TOUCH!!!!" which my dogs know to mean they are not to get even close to it]. But, of course, this is not a behavior you can expect of a puppy...

My poodle, who lived to be over 20, used to get chocolate, grapes, pizza with onions; pretty much anything I was eating, she would get. At the time, I had no idea those things were toxic to dogs.

Yes, we used to do all kinds of wrong things -sheesh, we used to feed cats food made out of corn and soy, for heavens sake!- but, thankfully, we learned better. Poodles are one of the most longevous breeds of dogs - I knew one that was 25!
