Can you be happy with a parrot that doesn't talk?

Postby Michael » Thu Jan 07, 2010 10:20 am

Can you be completely happy to have a well behaved/social parrot that never talks? Would you be disappointed if you acquired a species known to be a good talker that never talked?

Happy? Yes. Dissapointed? Probably.

When buying a parrot that's known for talking I would be hoping that it would talk so I would be a little dissapointed that it didn't. Talking ability wouldn't be a reason that I would choose a certain bird though, so I know that I'd still be happy with it whether or not it ended up talking.

What Mandy said. Noodle doesn't really talk. She kind of makes a mumble weird sound that could be talking but it's not clear at all.
So far Marvin has only really said Ow clearly.
I would still love them if they never talked!!

Kili barely talks either. Her best word is "hello" and even that isn't very clear (more like "e-o"). This is not a problem though. I like it when she talks but it's not that important. However, talking is better than screeching so the #1 reason i want my parrot to talk is so that it isn't making annoying noises instead. If I could have a quiet vs talking parrot I could go both ways but would probably prefer the quiet one.

If they never learn to talk then they never learn to talk back ;)

There's nothing more frustrating (although funny) than when Mojo bites me and then tells himself he's a good boy.

This. I definitely hope my Quaker starts talking someday just because I think it's funny and cute. But if she doesn't that's fine. It's not like I'm going to love her any less or give her away just because she doesn't talk.

Teyla doesn't talk but she does do a few vocalizations. I can do different rhythms of "Choo Choo" and she will repeat them in rhythm...but, she has to feel like responding to me.

Meanwhile, when I bought Tamber, I had no idea he talked.

My reasons for becoming a parrot owner might seem sort of rediculous to some people. I had a long haired miniature daschund who was my baby. He was high mainenance because he was paralyzed in the rear legs and he was still a happy dog who lived to the age of 14. He died in 2005 of natural causes. This was the 3rd time in my life I had my heart ripped out over losing a very special dog. In all cases, these dogs lived till about 13 or 14 years.

I wanted a parrot because they live longer. Thankfully, I have been blessed with 2 wonderful birds!
I'd love them no matter what they can or cannot do.

My parrot Weezy is a Senegal. I've read everywhere that they're excellent talkers but from the likes of everyones reply, they aren't big talkers themselves. Weezy was named "Weezy" because he sounds like a wheezing old man. The only thing Weezy will say is "Cheez-it". I've worked and worked with him on "hello", "goodnight", etc but he doesn't like to talk. He's always whistling, cooing and making his kissing noise, and I'm more than happy with that. I wished he would talk but then again, parrots don't exactly have the best talking voice on earth. He doesn't scream and that's all a multi-person household could ask for. (:

My Amazon is a green-cheeked...not known for talking...but she can say 'Hello', Good girl!' and some other distinct phrases that I recognize, but can't make out words (another language?)...but she only talks when she's stressed...so I haven't heard anything from her for years!

The Pi says his name and 'Good boy' 'Good girl' but those are very garbled...

And the Grey won't stop talking...lol...but she won't talk if you look at her...

All three are big into the wolf-whistle...I think it's become their flock call...

Absolutely! Especially considering I've always had birds that 'aren't supposed to talk'. I really just like looking and touching and hearing chirps. I love when my parrots make more native calls than mimics. I think native calls are so pretty(even the screeching).

I prefer second hand birds, largely because you already know how they are going to be when they grow up. They are set in their personality and their basic abilities.
