Open Windows in Spring.

Postby kaylayuh » Sat Mar 12, 2011 6:28 am

Do you open your windows in the spring/summer?

Everywhere I've read suggests that windows should always be closed with birds around. I quite like having my windows open during the spring and summer months, especially as I currently have no air conditioner and it can get pretty warm.

My windows all have screens in them so the birds can't fly out and nothing can get in. And because my apartment is so tiny, I can see the birds from almost every point in my apartment unless I'm in the kitchen, and they're in the cage anyway.

So is this safe? Or should I learn to live with being hot, which isn't advisable with the medications I'm on.

I open my windows with screens in them. My birds don't fly into the windows whether they are open or not so it is safe. However, you have to judge based on how your own parrots behave.

One likes to occasionally perch on the window, but has never actually flown into it. Surprisingly, she's flown into the wall more than she's flown near the window.

I'm assuming it should be safe. Thanks!

All of our windows have screens.

I also have blinds, so they wouldn't ever fly into a window.

However, if I were to have a large cockatoo, who was prone to chewing, I would probably keep the window closed, just to be safe.

I have bird feeders and squirrel feeders outside my windows. The windows have metal frames so I put a piece of wood on the cill to make it flush with the window.

Depends on how mechanical your bird is, does your bird know how to slide open the screens? Or is it easy to chew through? I've seen some flimsy screens where it's really easy to slide open if something pushed on it lightly.

I'm mostly worried about the chewing. Pigpen likes to land on the windows and loves to chew everything she can get her beak around. The screens themselves aren't too easy to open and Pigpen is only a budgie, but I'm not sure if she'd be able to chew her way through it.

Well even if she doesn't chew much, budgies are tiny. They can fit through small holes.

I open windows with the screens in them. When I come back from work, often hear my munchkins from my parking space ;) This year will be better with Chico companion!

Um, either yours budgies come much much smaller than ours, or mesh come in a much bigger spacing, cause those things keep out mossies!!
