cockatiel- fruit problem!!!

Postby Pola » Sun Jan 31, 2010 2:21 pm

Hey
I have a cockatiel which is about 5 months. (I bought it from a store when he was 12 weeks, parent reared) Now he is half tame.

I have a problem, because he does not eat any fruit or vegetables he just eats seeds! I am worried as i read on the internet that 70% of cockatiel's diet should consist of fruit and vegetables. I think that he is not getting enough vitamins and minearals.
What should i do? Please help. :)

I think you read the wrong information. I don't think it is nearly that much fruit/veg for cockatiel. Probably 70% NOT fruit/veg...

I'm also trying the same here. Hoping to have him try some different fruit. Interestingly I offered my cockatiel some Mango, he looked at it like "Get that away from me!". I ate some in front of him and then he tried it!

if my tiels dont take to a particular fruit or veggie when i put it in their cage, i will serve myself up the same veggies on a plate and eat them with my tiels - they always want to eat what i eat! just make sure you dont feed them the same piece thats been in your mouth/bitten off by you, as human saliva has bacterias that can be harmful to our feathered friends.
also, its worth looking into sprouting seed for yout tiel, it is way healthier than regualr seed, and is easy, and it expands so much in size that you save money on buying seed.

this is a link to my youtube sprouting vid if you are interested... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K93AEder93Q

and there is also another vid in a similar vein, growing birdy grass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRXYkw-pgbY
parrots arent mere ornaments, and they're hardly "just a pet" they are intelligent and emotional creatures who want our companionship. As a bird owner, its a pleasure to make my parrots lives as happy, enriched and healthy as possible

We have some tiels that stay with us and the only veggies they seem to eat are peas and broccoli. I do try and tempt them with sprouted seeds and some eat them and some don't. None will eat fruit and only one of them eats their pellets. You could also try cooked grains or pasta.
