Postby Farlap » Thu Jul 19, 2012 5:58 pm

When I first started keeping a parrot fifteen years ago I used to buy a sort
Of harsh wood chip for th bottom of the cage. Does anyone still use this or is newspaperthe
Modern preference? What does everyone use please?

Welcome to the forum.

I tried wood chips but they treated them like invaders and threw them out. I am back to newspaper.

I use sandpaper for my budgie, I find it easier than newspaper myself. But maybe that's becuase I had a Rosella as my first bird, her poop was laerger than a budgies and made me feel a bit ill sometimes when I changed her newspaper xD

Newspaper for me. It has tons of benefits the woodchips dont:
- less messy
-doesn't harbour germs
-easier to monitor poop for changes in frequency/abnormalties
-dust free
- helps kill germs (cant remember where I read that but seen it a few times)
- doesn't fly round the room when bird flaps
-easy to change reguarly
-quick to change

The only benefits I can think of for the woodchips is:
-more natural for them
-can chew/play with them (not sure how healthy that is though tbh)

Both of those assume there is no grate to prevent access to the chips.

I have to put magnets in the corners to keep Tommy from getting under it and trying to build a nest.

Newspaper is always the route to go here (or paper towel---but unlike the reptiles who only poop in one spot that can get expensive with birds!).

It's cheap, non-toxic and doesn't modify droppings (so I can get a good health report if need be) and doesn't grow bacteria etc either.

I use bird cage liners that I buy in bulk. I can place a stack in the tray and remove the top sheet daily. The liners can be custom cut to fit the bottom of your cage. They are pure white (exactly the same color and consistency of the white paper used on exam tables in a doctor's office) so there is no harmful or messy print. There are a number of sources where you can locate these liners if you Google "bird cage liners" online.

I differ a bit right now they hang out on the swing alot so I place paper under it to get the dopping health report, as of cages and playstand I currently have something im not sure what its called in english but it almost looks as plantsoil but is made up of wooden fibers, they dont play with it but it looks better I think, and for some reason feels fresher tht stepping down into newspaper when they drop a toy and climbs down to get it.
