Im helping out a friend and her family until they can get on thier feet. She has an 11year old step daughter that completely terrized my bird kicking at her swinging at her even tossed a pillow with her on it. Now we have punished this girl gave her time outs talked to her the whole bit....she dont listen she is out of control when it comes to my bird (Sierra). Today Sierra has had enough. She literly chased after the little girl. She ran after her wings a flareing straight attack mode. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life. I have gotten after this girl for being mean to my bird so much that she isnt even allowed anywhere near Sierras cage. Now that I have stopped the girl from terrizing my bird my bird is terrizing the girl. Its the funniest thing ever. Sierra chased her from one couch to the other,then ran acrossed the floor after her into the kitchen I wanted to stop her but I was laughing so hard I couldnt....luckly the little girl managed to escape thru the back door. Now what do I do about this???????????????????

Nah but seriously it is really hard work unless the girl changes attitude totally and wants to help out with getting rid of this behavior, and even then it is hard work...

At 11 the child is old enough to have some understang of what she has done and is old enough to have some bloody respect. If any child came into my home terrorising my birds they would be out on their ear regardless of whether they had anywhere else to go tbh.

Hopefully the girl now realised her actions have consequences and she will never do it again. If the family wont be with you long I would be tempted to leave it and just keep them away from each other, when she is gone start socialisation with other people so the 'too learns most people are ok.

If they are with you a while then I guess the first thing I would try is basic training, if your bird has already have some training start with training at the opposit end of the room for a while with the child sitting quietly at the other end. Over a few days gradually move her closer, get her to feed large treats (so the bird sees it before it enters a rage) to the bird then maybe do some training with your 'too herself. Go back some steps if the bird get agitated or stressed.

The first thing to do is explain to the child what you are doing and why you are doing it, maybe tell her she can help teach the bird some tricks if she co-operates. Get her wearing thick clothes incase the 'too does give chase and most importantly stop laughing and stop the child running or screaming. Why would the bird want to give up a game that causes such exciting drama?

11 is definatly old enough to know better.my son is 7 so his friends are all under 10 and they all know not to tease my birds. if they don't i take them to the laptop and pull up pictures/videos of parrots attacking.

I'm pretty horrified by the story. This is how animals become phobic and hate people. I hate to say it but you are responsible for the safety and well being of your animals. This story actually really upsets me. i don't like that your cockatoo was put in a situation where it felt it needed to attack someone to feel safe. You need to talk with her parents. She does not have an understanding of clear boundaries. This is extremely unsafe for your cockatoo and the child. Start with the parents. Make them understand that they need to get their child under control or she can't come out of her room for her safety and the safety of your cockatoo.

Been tempted to bite the little girl myself actually....I am so worried that Sierra will actually bite her cause its gunna hurt thats for sure

Ive done everything I can to make this little girl understand that what she is doing to my bird is not accepitable and wont be tolerated...Now its to the point where I have had to remove the girl from parts of the house for both of thier safty....Im sorry but I wouldnt of felt bad if Sierra would of bit her she has it coming.....If I hadnt known her step mother for 20+ years and if they had some where else to go I would of kicked them out already my house belongs to my son and my animals and I shouldnt have to lock up my animals because of a child....Actually I refuse to lock up Sierrra because of a child instead I removed the child from around Sierra...Thats the only thing I could think of doing to protect them both

wow. uh, wow. this kid is eleven? shouldn't that be old enough to know that big bird (you've got a right?) equals big bite?
why is she attacking your bird? is she scared of it? i agree with you guys, pin 'er down!

Quarantine!
seriously, quarantine the kid. if she is a danger to your bird, she shouldn't be around it.

also, even though i totally understand not being able to laugh, try not to encourage your bird attacking small children. (oh if only... uh, never mind.. )
