Tiki is happier flighted

Postby GreenWing » Fri Oct 12, 2012 12:15 am

I understand and agree 100 percent with others on the breeding stance. I bought my Tiki at an exotic bird shop. At the time, I didn't know any better; I walked into that store on a whim, and she "chose" me. I unexpectedly fell in love with my little green gal. If I ever take in another bird, they'll be rescues.

Tiki is now flighted. More specifically, at this present time, she can only fly short distances, but with time, she'll fly even better. I will NEVER clip her. She'll be flighted for life.

Now, let me say that with my sennie, I encountered roadblocks and still have sexual maturity ahead of me. But Tiki now flying to reach me and landing on me when she needs to... has tremendously changed my bird for the better. She is less aggressive. She is more confident. She is happier. My husband has even noticed the difference.

Bottom line is, birds are meant to fly. Being flighted means a healthier bird that will live considerably longer, and will be happier and less aggressive.

:senegal:

Thanks to everyone here at theparrotforum who continue to teach me, and help me be the best bird owner I can be.

Aw that's so great to hear! Congratulations! Gosh i hope the same thing happens here. How did you teach her? Did you teach recall training or did she do it herself? I would love break through like that. You are a great bird mommy :)

Aw, thanks! You're an amazing bird mommy, too!

No recall training yet, but that's in the future. Presently I'm working on the "wing" trick, behavior training, and vocalizations. Tiki talks quite a bit. She says "love you" as everyone knows, but I'm trying to teach her "hey baby" ; other than "love you" it's a lot of tiny-voiced babbling

How is training going with your Nika?

That's great! I wish more parrot owners would see for themselves what a difference it makes.

Today Tiki flew at us when we called her by her name! We coaxed her saying, "Tiki, Tiki" with arm outstretched, and she flew at us and made it! She was practically beaming. I'm so proud of her.

They really are. I am amazed by their intelligence!

It's really true; I wish others would allow their birds their right to fly. I can't thank you enough, Michael!
