Bird Diapers..?

Postby Kathleen » Tue Oct 06, 2009 6:48 pm

I just came across bird diapers online through a photo of some birds. I realized what the birds were wearing, and then I searched for what I thought it was. Bird diapers.

Do you use them? What are your thoughts about it?

Bird diapers as in Flight suits?

That's the only time I've heard of bird diapers.
Personally, I'd prefer using a harness.

I have bird specific shirts when I am at home and they are out. They can ruin those by pooping and chewing them all they want, I couldn't care less ;)
And I'd rather use those t-shirts than have my birds in diapers.

Maybe it was a flight suit? I don't know... seemed weird.

Agreed, they do seem weird.

In any case, I'm not a fan of the way they look either. I'm not sure they (flight suits) are any more practical than a usual harness is.

It looks funny and awkward to me. I never liked any kind of animal "humanized" by adding some sort of "clothing" (including dogs and apes).

I think you can avoid being dirted on if you learn your bird's rhythm and simply send it to the perch to do its business. It works 99 percent of the time for me.

I never understood it either. They only thing I would ever try on mine would be a top hat on Joey's head for a picture because it would be funny. But I'll most likely never do it and the mental image of it is enough to make me laugh.

Agreed! They do give out signs. Normally if they are perched on my finger and I see them doing the "potty dance" I either go above a surface which is easily wiped down or just stick my hand under them to catch the poo.
If I have them on my shoulder, sometimes I just don't look at them so it is why I have proper designated "bird shirts". Plus, they sometimes like to chew on it and I couldn't care less about the bird shirts.

Luckily now that Kili is flighted she will often fly back to her perch to poop which is good. As far as I remember she has never pooped sitting on my hand. Even when she was fully clipped she'd fly off my hand to poop (usually on the floor, would have rather caught it in hand and washed it than was floor but oh well). But she has no problem taking a poo from my shoulder and I usually don't notice it till someone tells me I have a stream of poo down the back of my shirt. Once she managed to poop on my collar and I was reaching up to fix my collar and gotta poopy smeared. And I was out of the house at that point too. I gotta start checking my shirts before going out of the house.

Ah the smearing...I've done that too.
One of them would have pooped on my shoulder and I wouldn't know until I turn my head around that side and got my chin in it. Yuk. But, again, this happens when I'm at home.

I swear, having bird designated shirts which you know to change before heading out works really well.

My boyfriend doesn't always change and I often have to look at his shirt (because I think of it, not because he asks) before he steps out because of possible streaks down the back.

That video didn't seem to have anything to do with diapers but I wanted to point out that her bird doesn't know the verbal command at all and she lied. The bird is being cued by the fingers and doesn't care what the word is. This discredits birds that truly do tricks on verbal cue. Kili really knows and does tricks on verbal cue for shake, wave, nod, turn around, bang, and wings. Other tricks like fetch and bowling are obviously cued by the props. I'll talk more about cues some other time.

I absolutely hate it when people dress up their animals. This is what I think of when I see someone with a dog in a little pink sweater or somesuch:

Me too!
On rare occasions it's necessary like on greyhounds who don't hold in their body heat.
Everyone else needs to knock it off!
So no clothes for my parrots.
I don't like the flight suits either.
Noodle is really good about not pooping on me. :)
