Cockatiel is growling?

Postby Eric&Rebecca » Wed Apr 03, 2013 8:22 am

Recently Edmund has been making this low but loud growling sound. I'm not sure what it is, the vet says hormones or just something he's picked up. He does it over and over to get attention, very rarely does when you're in the room with him and never when he's out the cage.

He has different body positions each time and doesn't seem to do it at a particular time of day or at an object. I've been trying to record it but no luck yet. He was at vets recently and was completely healthy so I'm not extremely panicked.

Any other persons tiel's do this?

Jack used to do something which was like a cross between a hiss and a growl? It was never something I would actually describe as a growl though.

Not hissing at all. His beak is completely closed. Kind of like a hoover sound or a very aggressive humming. It's like he's going hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmgggggg hmmmmmmmmmmmmggggg

Can't say I've ever had any of my 'tiels do that nor did I hear any of the aviary 'tiels do it when I volunteered at the farm (they had none farm livestock animals for special needs students).

i'm sure its nothing to worry about though, they all have their little quirks.

It's quite funny. It's like he's a grumpy old man! Irritated that we aren't paying him enough attention. He also pews likes a laser gun when he doesn't like something. I'll try get it on video... it's hilarious.

I've never had a cockatiel so I don't know about their growling but my Poi grows at me sometimes out of aggression. However it doesn't sound like that's the case with Edmund. :-) But yeah, some birds can and do growl.
