DIY Bird Toys?

Postby Rebecca19 » Mon Apr 15, 2013 5:17 pm

Hi there,

I am the proud owner of 2 adorable rainbow lorikeets :)
I was just wondering, if anyone makes their own toys for their birds? What materials do you use?

I would love to hear from you! :)

I get bird toy making parts in bulk from online natural bird shop in the UK. Many reputable sites will have DIY equipments for bird toys. It's just a case of double checking the materials for safeness and toxicity.

I've made a lot of Akimi's toys out of cardboard and jute twine. She hasn't played with them much yet (she favours the toy brought with her from her old home), but she's also still getting used to her new home.

The thing is though, you have to tie all the knots really tightly in order to prevent a tangling hazard, and inspect them regularly for fraying.

My birds favorite toys are actually pieces of a toy. It was on of the ones with the little wiffle ball on a string. Any way it broke in my budgies cage and I didn't notice until I walk into the room and Blu had one of the balls and was swinging it around having a blast. He kept the ball until I got Connor and it unfortunately met its demise the other day (I stepped on it  )

I use cardboard rolls, safe brown paper & jute.
Also any old toys, you can reuse (old bells that have been chewed of, wooden blocks) stuff that they have chewed of the original toy. :D
:gcc: Also I am in the proces of making something with some pear wood I have skinned. I haven't finished treating it yet, nor have I decided what I'll be making yet :O

May I ask what you are treating it with? I ask as most if not all treatments tend to be toxic which is why only untreated wood is recommended.

I'm going to soak it in vinigar (the high acid will kill any mites/lice and unlike bleach it will stop the growth of fungus ect:) will this burn her feet??.. please correct me if this is wrong, I don't want any harm to come to her because of me...

Actually the recommended method is to heat the wood in an oven at 350 degrees F. for 30 min. this is what is legally required for woodcarvings that might cross state lines to prevent the spread on insects.as well as fungus.

Thanks :D
.... It's to big to fit at the moment though... so do you think i should cut it to fit or will vinigar do the job?
Sorry, I feel like I am being a real pain in the backside!!! i will probably cut it down into smaller bits and make little toys out of it in the end anyway.
Thanks again wolf :)
