An example of what fresh food I feed my birds

Postby Natacha » Mon Oct 12, 2009 11:11 am

I made a new batch for chopped fresh food for the birds this morning and figured I'd take a picture to share.

Overall picture (for some reason I made more this morning than I usually do..)

This time I used the following:

-1 big carrot
-Broccoli
-(1) Orange pepper and (half) a red pepper
-Some sweet potato
-Some red cabbage
-A couple leafs of Red chard
-A couple leafs of Kale
-An orange (the juice of it help keep the food fresher longer)
-Pomegranate seeds from one Pomegranate (oh yeah..it might get messy ;) )

I have also started a batch of fresh sprouts and will sprinkle some of those on the mix above when I serve it to them.

OMG, that looks like the kind of salads you get at fancy restaurants for $20! You treat your birds like royalty.

I do the EXACT opposite with Kili. I usually give her much less variety so that she actually has to eat her veggies rather than pick and choose and throw them all over the place. For instance here is what I think her order of preference is: snap peas, carrots, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, broccoli. If I gave her a mix of all of those, she'd eat them in that order and be unlikely to make it much past cauliflower and I'd be wasting all the others. So instead I try to alternate veggies by days or mix them together in such a way that she doesn't have too much of her favorite. I'll never give her enough favorite to make an entire meal cause she'd never get to the others. If I want her to get some broccoli, I have to give her less or none of the other veggies up that list of favorites. But she's good though. Any veggies I put in front of her she eats so I don't think it's a problem at all.

I try not to get too involved in chopping her food but I get worried about it staying in the grate so I break it small enough to fall through.

I think it's an opportunity to forage. They have to go through other stuff to get to what they want. Plus, it allows them to taste new stuff (have to bite into it to move it) and oddly enough, they don't eat the same thing in the same order from one day to the next, which is good. And the mix itself varies, the leafy green could be a different variety and some of the other vegetables could or could not be in there. There are always carrots though.

As for food sitting on the grate, I give them this in the evening, when we have dinner so it will no sit in the cage all day. I don't like the idea of letting fresh food in a cage all day, specially not in the summer. Therefor, in the morning they get a small piece of toast and a small portion of fruit which is most likely eaten before I head through the door to go work.

Other than that, they have pellets and a small portion of seeds available to them throughout the day.

Hi Natacha.
Really, I like your dish for feed to your birds and this dish is very nutritious for them. My friend is also very fond of same birds like you have and he wants to know that can their birds like to eat this full of nutritions dish? Please give me suggestion for him.
Thank you very much in advance from my friend also.

that looks lovely! for parrots or humans!
parrots arent mere ornaments, and they're hardly "just a pet" they are intelligent and emotional creatures who want our companionship. As a bird owner, its a pleasure to make my parrots lives as happy, enriched and healthy as possible
