I don't agree with Michael on a few subjects, this is one of them. Birds need to be birds and being birds means a high metabolism and pooping whenever they need to. If you require a pet that will never mess the house, get a dog or a cat - much easier on everybody.

It is really simple, if a bird learns to poop only in certain places or certain times then starts holding the poop because of this training the this can damage the bird internally and result in its demise.

Just off the top of my head; Try chronic constipation, or how about the one requiring surgical intervention to save the birds life , intestinal blockage or impaction.

Holding it in a few extra minutes doesn't cause that. My approach is mostly timing but also teaching them to go when put down or told to poop. There is no treat or obligation but just a suggestion of when to go. It works well with no health risks.

My two trained me when and were they wanted to poop. First thing in the morning when they get up they can poop any time the want to, but they wait for me to get them out. I didn't train them this is just what they did and I went along. Amos will step up and I put him on his cage door and he will say good morning to me and after a minute he drops the big one, we have done this routine for the past month. Every time I have him step up to come out of his cage he wants to sit on his door so he can poop. I do have newspaper under his door. LOL As for Andy he waits for me to put him on a perch so he can poop. they really have trained me. this is how they want to do it I just go along with it. So it's not so much as not letting them poop as were to poop.

Hmmm, what, do you think, will happen if you happen not to be there in the morning to let them out? Will they try to hold it or will they poop in their cage?
