Can all Budgies be tamed?

Postby IAmJuan » Wed Jun 23, 2010 5:02 pm

I'm getting a Budgie.. (from probably petsmart or petco, since i havent found any breeders around my area) and i was wondering if all of them can be tamed and made friendly??

Thanks

"That parrot is demised!" M, have you been watching Monty Python?

When one is selecting a bird from among others, as a pet-shop budgie or at a rescue, are there clues one can use to judge which may have easier temperaments than others?

BTW IAmJuan, have you considered getting a budgie through a breeder rather than a big pet store?

Have you tried touching basis with Bird clubs? I'm sure they could put you onto some breeders.

I have to disagree with you on that one. After breeding budgies for a couple of years I know that some budgies just aren't meant as pet companion. They're better of in an aviary with other birds.
On the other hand, this behavior can be recognized by a good breeder at a young age.
When the birds are fledged and can take care of themselves, I take them into the livingroom to check they are definately weaned before they go to their new owners. That takes about a week or so, and in that week I try to teach them the basic (people) skills (stepping up ect). In that week I can determine wether a bird likes to be with people or not.
It doesnt hapen often, but it happens. And if you find a breeder who actually works with the birds, he will know.

yes. just make sure you realize it doesn't happen overnight. it took me 3 months for my budgie to be completely comfortable with stepping up and coming out.

Have you ever taken one of these "untamable budgies" and worked with it for 3 months? I'm not saying that every budgie will be easy and personalities can certainly vary, but I do think any bird can ultimately be tamed. The variable is how hard and how long it will take.
