2 Parakeets fighting while Target training

Postby Parakeet » Tue Jul 27, 2010 2:47 pm

While I was doing the target training with my two parakeets (I use their names during training) I called one of the parakeets, then both of them came to the stick (they were on the same perch), and as the other one approached (the one i didn't call), the i called pecked at the other one!

How can i prevent this from happening any further?

So what? Just grab one and take it out. Work with it from there once it is out of the cage.

Another problem I found was that once I took it out of its cage, it wouldn't pay attention to anything else other than going back into its cage

take it into a different room, away from its cage (where it can't see the cage).

After I take one away from the cage it`s scared at first but then calms a bit down later, but it still won`t do Target training :?

How long should I wait for it to calm down?

Is your bird hungry when you try to target train? What is the motivation for it to train?

I'd ask, also, what is the goal of training at this point? Is it to get them more comfortable, or is it to allow you to perform necessary behaviors. I'm guessing everything might be easier if they were housed separately for a while.

Michael...I'm curious, I've seen you advocate flooding with budgies before, but not with larger birds. Why is it OK to "just grab" a budgie but not a bigger bird? You are more likely to emerge unscathed, but wouldn't it be better to learn skills that would work for all parrots, even if you don't have to have them to manage a budgie? Wouldn't it be better for the budgie's trust of you in the long run? I'd certainly do it in an emergency, just as I'd towel Scooter or presumably a larger bird if I had to, but is it really the most productive approach? Or is it just easy and mostly harmless?
