Red Belly setback :(

Postby born2fly » Thu Sep 02, 2010 10:58 am

My Red-Belly has been warming up and letting me scrach his head recently. He also started comming out of the cage on his own, it looked like he enjoyed it. All changed yesterday.

He was on top of the cage playing, and someting fell on the floor and spooked him. He started flying, when he stoped his frantic flying I let him calm down as he was shaking quite a bit. After a while I put him back to the cage. Well this morning when got near the cage he was trying to get away and when I got next to the cage he went at me like he wanted to atack me. Had to go to work so didn't have time to observe him much more, I will see how he is when I get back.

Any suggestions/comments would be apperciated.

All I can add is general information. When a bird spooks and 'crashes'...unless you can see that it's seriously injured...let it recover and then from a distance, coax it to come to you on it's own. That way it becomes the bird's decision to view you as a safe haven.

If you chase a bird or rush a bird in order to pick it up it may see you more a predator or as a threat...and then it takes a long time to regain it's trust.

I would leave the bird to recover in the cage for a few days...in the meantime talk to it in a happy, fun voice, offer treats through the bars, etc. But don't make any attempts to put your hands near it until it calms down.

And be prepared that it may take a while...

How old is he again?

Red bellies are prone to having "panic attacks", specially when younger.
It is very VERY important that you let him calm down on his own after such a thing otherwise he might associate you with the fright, which you want to avoid.

You'll have to be patient and let him get over it on his own term.

Hes about 6years old

As of today he still won't let me touch him, so I give him space. He comes out of the cage only if I am far away. But I think I know part of the reason why he's like that. Had guests over the weekend and I think they spooked him even more
My GCC enjoyed all the attention and I asked them to interact with him, but some didn't listen.
