Toucan?

Postby issy » Thu Mar 25, 2010 8:56 pm

I've been looking up Toucan's on youtube and they are adorable. They are so smart and make cute purring sounds. =]

Anyone have any idea how they are as pets and what kind of care they need, because i really want one.

I heard they have verrrrrry specific needs and are extremely costly in terms of maintenance. Not as friendly as a parrot either.

Hello:

you should check out bird paradise in Burlington NJ, they have one there in the family room, when we go there to visit our baby my husband just loves watching him, if anyone can help you with a Toucan bird paradise can.

I can only give you information from many other forums and even a place where they breed toucans for pets (emerald forest bird gardens)

Their beaks are of a very light structures, so they cannot bite that hard, but i did see some people hiss in pain. Also, since the beaks are large, they can give you a nasty jab. They need a brutally strict diet since they have a problem with iron. They are usually friendly and make a funny purring noise when happy. They are also quite intelligent and many have been taught to free flight (but it is still a risk)

They can make good pets, but they can be as hared to keep as larger parrots.

They're veryyyyyy demanding. They are known for eating screws, nails and other small objects lying around and need a very specific low-iron diet.
