Anybody own a Princess Parrot?

Postby paper_lantern » Sat Aug 27, 2011 7:41 pm

Does anybody own or have experience with princess parrots (otherwise known as the Princess of Wales parrot)? There doesn't seem to be much online about these birds other than breeding information. I'm looking into getting one as a pet, but I don't know if they make good pets. Are they extremely loud? I spoke to the breeder I'm thinking of buying one from and she assured me that the adult male she has for sale is super quiet, about the same noise level as a cockatiel. However, I read some comments left on youtube videos and they said that the Princess parrot is an extremely loud bird.

Are they nippy? They seem to talk well from what I've seen in the few videos I could find. Do they like being held? Cuddled?

Anyone with any information at all, please let me know! :)

Hi :) I have a male blue princess parrot, named Prince (we're bad at naming pets ok?). He's the most beautiful boy, I couldn't imagine our house without him. He is hand reared, but hasn't got mug interest in people, he's perfectly happy with us, will come over for a cuddle and kisses (lots of kisses), but on his terms. I guess you'd call him aloof. I have no doubt that that is due to his environment tho, he has a best friend who his life revolves around, this best friend happens to be an untamed Red Wing, which I think stops Prince from being as cuddly. He's the most amazing flyer, he reminds me of a fighter pilot the way her zips around and skims the floor/walls/ceilings/heads. While our boy doesn't talk, he's an amazing mimicker. He'll hear something a few times and then mimick it perfectly. He's much much louder than our Tiel's, and has to compete with any noise in the house, including quiet noises. Thankfully he'll also compete to be quieter than you so can be easy to calm down. In 7 years I've been nipped by him once, that was just recently when I had to catch him and hold him to check an injured foot, it was just one hard nip, not a bite. No where near as bad as I get from my GCCs. He's the biggest clown, a real goof. If you have he opportunity for q handreared one, I'd take it, I couldn't imagine life without our little Princey.
Any other questions??

Just thought I'd add, Prince is as loud as the Cockies outside when he chooses to, that is, when he's imitating the buggers. He can also do an extremely quiet, beautiful whistle that he learnt off dad. Just depends on the atmosphere. Sometimes you'll walk past him and he'll reach out and grab you by the sleeve, then make his kissing noises to you, he's literally asking for you to spend some special 1 on 1 time with him. Just beautiful.

Thank you so much for the information! I contacted a breeder and he almost changed my mind about buying a Princess parrot, but after reading what you said I think I will still get one.

The breeder mentioned that they don't enjoy human contact at all, and that I would be lucky if I were to get one that wants to step up. But it seems as though Prince enjoys getting attention, just on his terms. =)

Honestly he can struggle to step up most of the time, but if you do it just the right way (get down on his level and chat and whistle first) he jumps right up. However he uses it as a stepping stone to your shoulder, to get him into his cage we've taught him to go 'in your house', usually just after putting something favorite in it. But this is actually more for our Red Wing than for Prince.
Princey loves attention, he's certainly not a cuddle bug like a Tiel, he's not interested in scratches but boy can he kiss!! He comes right up to your face making kissing noises and preening your cheeks and hair.
Does your breeder breed the different colours? The blue colour is truly stunning. One day I'm going to get Prince a handreared Lutino female (so he can leave the poor Tiel alone  The Lutinos are just beautiful.

aw i have a three year old lutino male i would never pair him with a blue though as that just makes whites/albinos whatever the color term,in the future i plan to pair him up im just not sure what color female yet as theres some other colors being produced now, i was told by the breeder i got mine from his sister went to a breeder who breeds lavenders,i have never seen the lavenders but i have seen the palids very pretty not a big diffrence from the lutinos i would have to say their more of a light green tint and the pink is more a watermelon pink,my guy has some uniqueness to him in some light you can still see the light green on his shoulders and he has a lilac rump all the lutinos i have seen dont so i wonder what his breeding would make so i want to make my female color choice carefully, and to think i was looking for a rock pebbler at first and got a princess because no breeders i had listed for them had any chicks that year, but i will say that the large australian parakeets are my favorite and i plan to add a male australian king parrot maybe next year we shall see :)
