Looking for a new parrot, not sure which species to get.

Postby caseymayyne » Wed Aug 31, 2011 10:52 am

I'm a big fan of love bird's personalities. I have a cockatiel as well, and he's alright but I'd rather a bird with a very different personality. I'd rather a smaller bird, with a bigger personality. I was thinking about a parrotlet. I've done a lot of research and some of the websites say that they're not really very attached to one owner. I'm looking for a bird that wants to be around me most of the time. Very playful/clownish and inquisitive. Any suggestions at all would be very helpful.

I suppose you could consider a Meyer's Parrot which is a relatively small bird, smaller of the poicephalus genus, and is supposed to have one of the sweeter temperaments of the genus.

Every Meyer's I have met has been very calm. Cute, but quite different from a lovebird I may say.

Calm...maybe. I'd say a little shy.

Are Green Cheeks or Meyers parrots sort of boring? Thats my problem with my cockatiel. She just sort of sits there. Doesn't really like to do anything at all. I like my lovebird because he's so interesting.

The green cheeks are definitely hyper and clownish. Go meet some at a store, but I guarantee you that you will like one. ;) They use their feet too, which is cute! The Meyer's in comparison is more boring from what I've seen.

*GASP* PARROT INSULTERS! just kidding
Conures have been given the name of clowns and personality in one little ball of feathers. Hyper and energetic, the are quite in contrast of cockatiels. The only thing that may put people off is the screaming, but pyrrhuras are usually quieter than the Aratingas.

Sure meyers are not as showy, but as one african parrot professional said "birds love being loved, but meyers love loving you". They seem to be very sweet as i have heard.
