I made a homemade playgym for my birds basically using just a drill (but screwdriver works)

Heres a list of materials
-nickel plated screws
-nickel plated screw eyes (for attaching toys)
-sisal and cotton rope (bird-safe)
-natural branches (again bird safe and washed/baked)
-two square wooden boards (I used untreated pine)
-two wooden rectangles (untreated pine)
-three square dowels (two the same height as the wooden rectangles and one the length of the base)
-lots of toys!!

Here's a couple pics, the first two are just after I finished it and the last two are with my sunnie, Briar, playing on it :) hope this helps

this is the stand I made. It cost me about a dollar, not including toys :) the table was 25cents from an estate sale and the branches were from my lemon tree. I attached the main T branch to the base with a screwdriver and drilled appropriately sized holes into it to stick the smaller sized branches into. I can replace the branches with fresh ones when needed as well since she loves to chew them and strip the barch

aaawwwwww she reminds me of my Rue. I miss her dearly. Oddly enough I'm allergic to cats and yet keep taking in strays!

Anyway, I've got some wood that is baking in the sun right now that I hope to use for a playgym. I got some screws and eyelets and I managed to salvage some coconut shells that will make good bowls and toys lol!

I just need to figure out what kind of base I want to get.

The kitty is cute! My very first cat (and I've only had 3...still have 2...lol) was a tortie/white...

I just never get tired of their colours.

If you make a playstand, make sure the base is easy to clean/ or that it's easy to take apart for cleaning. The commercial ones are much easier to clean, IMO. After you've spent time scraping poop out of cracks, crevices, gravel (I had a base with a tree stand filled with gravel), etc., you get tired of the home-made stands quickly...

I had one commercial table-stand with everything stuck on a flat base, and it was horrible to clean...drove me batty...to the point you don't want the birds playing on it! :o I did give up and put it away...

The birds don't care at all what their playstand looks like...but I do. I want something aethetically pleasing as well...and most homemade stands don't deliver...but that's totally personal...I' have seen some gorgeous homemade stands as well - but they were generally of the 'tree' type.

I was thinking either putting a plastic layer over wood, getting some laminated wood, or just putting newspaper over the base(what I do now with my T stand).

Pictures!

It is still a work in progress, but I got the branches attached to the base and put a coconut bowl on. I needs to do the toys and probably a bridge and maybe a boing from one side.

Norma seems to like it.(to give you an idea it is almost 5' tall and is on a 2'x3' base)
