Is the paper from oranges safe?

Postby lwis » Thu Nov 17, 2011 1:10 am

I was just wondering if anyone knows if the little green papers that are used in mandarin orange packaging are safe for birds. I was thinking of shredding some and using them in foraging toys. I have a huge box of oranges and it would be awesome if I could do something with all the paper that comes with them.

Thanks!

I'm not really sure what kind of paper you mean. Is it glossy or is it normal paper but coloured? If it is normal, coloured paper, it should be ok but to be on the safe side, I would probably advise you to use brown paper (the thing that is used in envelopes....without the glue of course) because it is the most natural and it isn't dyed

The paper isn't glossy, it almost looks like tissue paper but a little thicker, and it is a very light green. I might hold off on using it until I find more information about what it is made of.

I would worry about pesticide transfer from the orange to the green paper.

I would not use it.

That said, i do let my birds shred tissue papper, just not tissue paper from produce, and usually just the white stuff since im not sure what they use to dye the paper. The birds LOVE it.
