Cocoa visits grandma.

Postby Erithacus » Sun Jul 24, 2011 7:25 am

We took a break during the weekends and drove to my mom in law's house who stay 180km away. We spent a night there and enjoyed our stay.
My in laws run a hardware store. You can see Cocoa having some good time at the hardware store, at the oil palm plantation, at a small town not far away and in the house. We had durians before we left.

You can get durian at your local asian market. Look for smaller ones because you may not be able to eat them due their stench. It is hard to cut them and transport them though. There is a reason why people use machetes to open them. My mom uses a cleaver to open them ( I'm 12).

You don't simply cut open a durian. Opening a durian requires skill. Once you have picked the perfect durian, it’s time to open it up. If you look carefully at the base of the fruit, you will see faint brownish outlines of a 5-pointed star. These are the durian’s sutures, or the lines that separate its different segments. Follow these lines and you will find it a breeze to split open a durian.

The only time I have seen durian is on the Travel Channel on TV. It has a bad reputation.

I keyed in Inengkand and it came up England. I have added USA to my bio. Would you all please add your place and country to yours.

I live my adventures through the travel channel these days. I miss the Air Force and when I could travel to different places. My most adventurouse was the Philippines. I had a "House Girl" who was more like a friend. She took me to the local places with her so I could experience the local people and things.

I'm just reciting what I see my mom do. Thanks for the tips though. Papaya is going to have some soon. I wonder if the smell attracts/repels different parrots like it does to people. Hmm...

Not all parrots like to eat durian. My tiels don't eat.
Some tips here. Pour water into the empty shell and add a pinch of salt. Drinking it helps to cool down your body because durians are very heaty.

Do not consume excessive alcohol after eating durian.

Another common local belief is that the durian is harmful when eaten with coffee[27] or alcoholic beverages.[4] The latter belief can be traced back at least to the 18th century when Rumphius stated that one should not drink alcohol after eating durians as it will cause indigestion and bad breath. In 1929, J. D. Gimlette wrote in his Malay Poisons and Charm Cures that the durian fruit must not be eaten with brandy. In 1981, J. R. Croft wrote in his Bombacaceae: In Handbooks of the Flora of Papua New Guinea that "a feeling of morbidity" often follows the consumption of alcohol too soon after eating durian. Several medical investigations on the validity of this belief have been conducted with varying conclusions,[4] though a study by the University of Tsukuba finds the fruit's high sulphur content caused the body to inhibit the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase, causing a 70% reduction of the ability to clear toxins from the body.
