Newbie delurking to say hi!

Postby simka » Sun Sep 19, 2010 9:27 am

I am so delighted to find the parrot training blog and this forum. My husband and I are relatively new bird parents--we have lived with a Jardine's parrot for about 7 months now and we just adore him. We think he's about a year old but don't know his hatch date. He was weaned when he came to live with us.

I look forward to learning about bird husbandry and behavior from this forum!

Note to self. Find something to give Michael a hard time about. :P

You know this is your fault right? You did take a very cool name out of the running. Say... how 'bout Namurt?

So, what is the Jardine's in this threads name? Also, when did he develop the orange on his forehead? That might help determine his age.

hi, everybody!

Our little charmer is named Kalki--I can't believe I omitted such an important piece of information! It is pronounced "khul-key" but he says "kulwee" or occasionally "cookie."

Kalki is a name from Hinduism -- he is the tenth incarnation of the god Vishnu, sometimes depicted as a winged horse.

We brought him home but heard different things about his age from the breeders/bird store folks. One person said six weeks. The other said six months. He had the merest hint of orange--2-3 of the teesy head feathers when he came to live with us. He's has been molting in new feathers sporadically since then. I think I may have spotted a new area of orange coming in further back on his head.

He was clipped by the breeder but some flight feathers have come in. Although he doesn't get much loft, he glides down with grace, sometimes as far as 15 feet. He looks like he might be learning to introduce some intentional curves to his flight path, too.
