G'day from Haley and Samson in Australia!

Postby HaleyJade » Wed Mar 21, 2012 6:21 pm

Hello there everyone!
My name is Haley and I'm not a first bird owner, I have had cockatiels, budgies and a canary and currently have a sulphur crested cockatoo, a galah and a long billed corella.
However, I have joined this site just after my recent purchase of my rainbow lorikeet, Samson!
He is a dream - beautifully hand reared... Oh gosh, he just walked over my honey toast and across my iPad! Anyway, I have only had him for two days now and he is already calling to me and busting to get out of his cage when enter the room. He is only 8 weeks old so I'm currently teaching him not to nibble so as to hopefully prevent any future biting. He's still learning to use his beak which is beautiful as yesterday after profusive licking of an apple piece, he finally figured out he could chew it too! He is happy to socialise with anyone as well, even my younger sister who is shunned my every bird we own and have owned!
There are only a few issues that I'm not certain how to handle, as I haven't had a bird this young before and had to train them everything. First off, he's starting to call out a bit, not constantly and I know lorikeets are loud birds, but I'm not sure how to prevent this behavior from developing further. Secondly, he refuses to eat unless I'm in the room, or holding the food for him and this concerns me as sometimes I will be at uni for five hours straight.
He had plastic tape around his left wing to prevent him from flying, but I managed to get that off with some help. He's tentative with the wing and flew for the first time yesterday (:
He is a dream and I've fallen for him already! :rainbow:
