If someone offered you a parrot, would you take it?

Postby Michael » Wed May 26, 2010 11:11 am

If someone offered you a healthy parrot - of a species you really like - right now with cage and supplies included at no charge and you had to make an immediate decision, would you take it?

Of course this is hypothetical and the question is more about your attitude and desire for another parrot rather than the mechanics of making such decisions or the quality of the bird acquired in this manner. You can think of it as a circumstantial rehoming and not getting rid of a bad bird. Say a friend got ill or someone went bankrupt and wanted to give away the bird to a caring home. What do you think? What species of parrots would fall into this take on the spot decision for you?

I can say I wouldn't, since I've done it on a few occasions already.

I've been offered a number of free Meyer's parrots since getting Zuri. I've also been offered a few more Senegals and most of them would have been given with a cage and toys.

I do love these species but I know my limits and have come to the realization that I can not save them all. I'm really holding out for a female Red-bellied (which if I was offered a healthy one free this moment, I'd just jump on the occasion).

Right now, yes I would considering I'm looking to get another one anyways.

At this point, I'd say yes to any of the Poi's since I'm already experienced with a Senegal and a Red Belly. Aside from that, I don't think I could resist an Amazon, however I know it would be a lot more challenging. I'd probably say yes to a Pionus as well.

If it was an African Grey or a large Macaw, I would have to say no. I just think they are way too much bird for me to handle.

One, yes. More than one more, no. My husband would really ultimately like a cockatoo and if someone offered us one, I think we'd have to say yes. But it would depend, it's never a black and white yes or no situation.

Probably not. I'm moving in the next few months and am going to be extremely busy with some other stuff so I wouldn't want the additional hassle. I'd probably only take it if there were ZERO chance of the bird going to a good home otherwise.

Since I only have one parrot right now, and since the cage would be coming with it, yes I definitely would.
