Vacinate or not?

Postby Mr.Darcy » Sun Jun 20, 2010 1:49 pm

I am impatiently waiting for my baby Hahn's Macaw to wean and in the mean time I am researching whether or not to have the baby vacinated. What is everyone opinion on this? I will have only the one bird, I have no other pets (our 15 year old Beagle passed away in April) So any input would be greatly appreciated!

Can you vaccinate a parrot? I've never heard of this. What will you vaccinate it for and how often? Very interested in other comments on this thread.

You can vacinate against Polyoma virus which can be leathal to baby birds...and I have read recently about chlamydophilosis bacteria which can be spread from parrot to human too. I just want to be on top of any preventative measures I can take to ensure a long and healthy life for my parrot!

Ofcourse, and all the more thumbs up for you!
I know about polyoma, pbfd and other diseases, I just didnt know you could vaccinate a parrot against one or more. In Holland there is no such thing as far as I know, I need to look into this!
Could you copy a link to one of the sites youve read about this? I would really appreciate that!

If you're just going to have this one parrot and not travel with it or have it interact with others, I don't think you need to even consider vaccination. My breeder convinced me that there's no point in vaccinating my Cape Parrot. Also, last thing you want is a botched vaccination so unless you have good reason, probably safer to skip.

my vet told me that vaccinating a bird CAN cause (not all the time) unnecessary levels of stress including increased heart rate and abnormal sleep for up to 10 days

Scooter came to me vaccinated. Since birds are so vulnerable once they get sick, it seems as if it would be good to reduce the risks, but I'd definitely defer to the opinion of my vet if I had the choice to make. Have you picked out a vet for your new baby? Now might be a good time to do that and have that discussion.

The only bird I've heard should definitely be vaccinated is the Caique as they are especially susceptible to polyoma but my breeder did not vaccinate them and I deferred to his expertise. My caique is fine by the way. :D

Hey thanks for all the input. I have been leaning towards not vacinating, for all the reasons above. It is enough stress changing homes/human companions etc
