30 Year old. Nanday Conure Ill

Postby paco1846 » Mon Oct 23, 2023 1:43 pm

Hi,
In the last week or so my conure "Ira" has been fluffing most of the time. He's also become quite lethargic and bottom dwelling. His normal, loud squawk is now just a slight sound. He still has his appetite and there has been no change in diet. Could these be end of life signs given his age? I don't know if I want to risk taking him to a vet and undergoing tests. He hasn't been out of the house for more than ten years and it might be traumatizing.

Any thoughts?

Your bird is very sick and you need to take it to a vet. Birds don't age like mammals, they don't 'slow down' at all so any change in behavior is ALWAYS a symptom of disease. And the fact that he is still eating doesn't mean anything - birds in terminal hepatic lipidosis (which is, most likely, what it has), for example, eat with a good appetite until they die

Agree with Pajarita. Birds tend to hide their illness. When you're seeing ANY sign of them being sick, take them to an avian vet immediately.
In the meantime as you make that appointment make sure you keep the bird warm.
