Can a gas leak that killed the parents harm the eggs?

Postby BlueIndianRingneck » Sat Jan 15, 2011 11:17 pm

Have paid for a RN and the breeder just got ahold of us, he had a gas leak from a new furnace. Luckily everyone made it out okay, but one of the bird rooms was not so lucky. ALL of the birds, even the parents of our egg, unfortunately, died.

Our egg and it's siblings aren't due to hatch until around the 26th.

Should we be worried? Could the gas have penetrated the egg and harmed the chicks? I didn't know if there could be any nerve or brain damage thru an egg. The mother was on top of the eggs when they found her. The eggs are currently under a cockatiel in the aviary building outside that wasn't harmed.

There are pores in eggs. I know from a cockatoo breeder I know that eggs actualy gain weight during breeding. So they definately take in things from their surrounding throught the shell.
Chicks in the eggs however dont really 'breath'. They do need oxygen to filter through the shell, but not in the same manner we breath.
I would be more woried about the way the cockatiel treat the hatched chicks. They are known for killing off any young that dont 'look right'.

Does the breeder guarantee a healthy chick? If so, I think I'd just wait to see what happens, and make sure the chick has been evaluated by a vet prior to taking ownership. The breeder has been honest with you so far, which is a good sign.

That's a very sad thing to have happened.
