liquorice root/stick?

Postby rebeccaturpeinen » Mon Oct 31, 2011 3:21 pm

Hey guys, I was wondering... can you give a parrot a liquorice root/stick? I know they are healthy for us, its not candy. Jo loves to chew on stick and stuff and was wondering if I could give her one of those.

I googled it but am reading very different things.... some say yes some say no

I would not. My doctor told me not to eat the stuff that it was harmful.

Are we talking about the licorice candy, which is mainly sugar and dough, with licorice root extract as one of the last ingredients, or the actual licorice?

The actual licorice is very healthy. It has calming properties as well as tonifying properties. It's all around gentle. But I don't think I would give it to a bird, either. I feel more comfortable with it than I would with aloe, but it is still medicinal and they are much smaller than we are and with more sensitive livers, as well.
