Why is honey bad for parrots? And if it is bad how can they have a honey poultice?

A while back when I was sick I got the brilliant idea of sharing some honeycomb from my jar of honey with the birds. Since I always post pictures of bird food I posted pictures of the honeycomb. Then I found out it is a bad idea to give birds raw honey. I will post the link to the post in question and if you look at the comments at the bottom the person who told me about the honey (who definitely knows their bird stuff!) explained that it is for the same reason you aren't supposed to give babies honey. Something about their immune system not being strong enough yet and honey can have some bacteria that can be harmful. Good to know and something I definitely did not know before I was told about it.

You can't give honey to humming birds because it causes sores in the mouths and through their digestive system. I just assumed it would do that to any bird.

ahhh Thank you, That was interesting. I didn't know babies couldn't have honey either. Fortunately I won't be having any more of those

I was very surprised as well. Good thing I found out before having kids too. I wish more people knew about it though so I wouldn't have made such a stupid mistake.

For those curious about the reactions I got...they were very confused! Iggy would take a little bite and then become mystified by all the stickiness.

What about those honey stick treats? I don't buy them because I'm paranoid about the ingredients but I know they are very popular. Does anyone know if those are safe?
