New Aviary for finches

Postby MissLady9902 » Thu Feb 25, 2010 1:16 am

I ordered a nice flight aviary for my finches today! I'm excited!
So my finches will get to live in the new aviary and my dove can live in the finches old flight cage.

Nice! They're going to love it! How hard was it to find a larger cage with small enough bar spacing? I don't think I've seen a cage that size with 1/2 inch bar spacing.

I am just curious, what do you get out of owning finches? I'm just used to parrots so I really don't even know what people do with finches/canaries. Do you let them fly around the apartment? Are they friendly? Do they step up? Basically what do people do with birds like that?

There are ways to tame finches but it's tedious.
Imagine hand taming a wild caught parrot then multiply it x5. They're so small one wrong move and you'll snap their tiny twig legs or wings!
So I don't let the finches out. Once one's out it's extremely hard to get it back.
I usually shoo it to a corner then throw a light sheet over it then pick it up and put it back.
The whole ordeal is very stressful for them. That's why I wanted to get them a larger aviary. I just feel they're flight cage is too small!
At the same time I ordered a rather large cage for a senegal and a grey. Better bigger than smaller!
I think they're kind of like bird fish tanks. I just love the songs and believe it or not they have personality.
I think you're either a finch person or not. There's no in-between. At least not that i've heard.
Now I have seen hand fed finches and they're awesome little guys! Imagine a teeny bird wanting to be with us! They're like parrots then. I've not been able to find a breeder that hand feeds finches.
I was lucky and was able to get them on a pellet crumble diet otherwise they're messier than a parrot!
That's why I like LaFabers because it's crumbled and they look more like seed than the bigger finch pellets.

My dove you can pick up and handle a bit and I do let her have the option of being out most of the time but she usually prefers to be in her cage.
She's shy but warms up after a bit.

Wow, I bet they are going to love it!!

I've never owned them before but a woman I know has a whole bunch of them and she wants me to come get a couple. LOL I think I already have my hands full as well as my ears! Two toddlers, three birds, and a foster dog keep my house busy enough. Sometimes I think all I need is a man to complete the picture, but I think my home would drive a man to permanent bachelorhood. hehehe

Anyway, the woman that has them turned her sliding-door china cabinet into a finch show case. It is beautiful. I love watching them- they are so entertaining!! Yes, I agree it's like a fish tank. LOL I could stand there for hours just watching them. They are sooo busy!! It's like all they do is socialize with each other.

when i was at work one morning one of the girls fetched me to catch a bird in the toilets, when i got there was faced by a tiny thing, i caught it and had to box it till work finished, it looked worn out and i thought it would die. put it in old cage i had, cause i already had a canary i gave it a dish of food and water. went into the room in the morning and all seed gone, water gone and the little zebra finch was flying around the cage. kept it till it passed away. also when i was in the army i was walking through a wood and saw something blue on the ground, picked it up and it was a budgie, kept that till it died.

Sorry it's been so long since I've been on.
My finches LOVE their new house. I even have 2 baby zebra finches! :hatching:
The second egg has hatched now. They're SOOOO teeny tiny!

The finches in the corner of the new aviary.
The one in flight is the mother of the babies. The father is an all white zebra and he's not in this shot.
