Vinegar

Postby Kathleen » Tue Oct 13, 2009 2:06 pm

I've heard a lot about vinegar being used to clean parrot areas by many people. Is it safe? Is it effective? Is it toxic? Is it too smelly?

I do use white vinegar to clean my cages.
I dilute it in hot water (I barely put any vinegar in) and I also add a little dish soap.

As long as you don't put on straight, it shouldn't smell.

I use it to clean my dog crates and bird cage/perches. I dilute it the same way Natacha does.

I haven't noticed a smell afterwards. And it actually works amazingly to remove any odor in the dog crates. One of my foster dogs had a problem with peeing in the crate when we first got him, after using the vinegar and dish soap (very little dish soap) it was like a brand new crate :).

I've not used vinegar to clean my bird cages but I have used it to clean out fish tanks. They say to use vinegar because it's not harmful to the fish if a little gets in the water. I'll have to try on my bird cages!

This is good to know cause I just bought like a gallon of it!

One problem I have is with cleaning the water bottles for the birds because I put a lot of vitamins in them and they end up staying and sticking on the bottom. Someone suggested I try a little vinegar with baking soda. I will try that tonight and let you know how it works. Up till now, dish soap, boiling water, and bottle brush never got it all out but we'll see what happens. :)

Be sure to do that over the sink! It's going to make a volcano of bubbles!! (vinegar reacts with baking soda but not in a bad way) It should work though!
Good luck!

I am so mad at everyone who told me to use vinegar!!!!

I put some baking soda in the bird bottle first and then the vinegar. I capped the drinking straw cap because I wanted to mix the solution inside and get the cap/straw cleaned out from inside well it popped the cap like a champagne bottle which flew 15 feet over to the other side of room leaving a trail of nasty vinegar all over my couch and everything in its path!!!

I hope vinegar doesn't ruin leather couches??? :?

Lol! You should be mad at whoever told you to use baking soda, not vinegar! As soon as I read your first post I was thinking 'Oh no!' then sure enough I read your last one and it had exploded.

I really hope it didn't ruin your couches though... ;)

I tried to warn you!! I'm sorry that it got everywhere. :(
I don't think vinegar will hurt your couch.
