Travel Cages?

Postby Kirsten » Mon Oct 25, 2010 1:10 pm

So I'm currently looking at travel cages for my Sun Conure so I can take her outside and let her look around. I also need one for vet visits, trips, etc. I know that there are some requirements for regular cages, but what about travel cages? Obviously they need to be large enough to let the bird FIT, but are there any cages you guys can recommend? I mean I'd like to take her on walks without worrying about larger birds. I've seen things like Pak-O-Bird and other similar packs. Are those good at all?

I really recommend doing what I did for Truman (unfortunately it came out a bit small/tight for him but I know it would be totally suitable for a Sun Parakeet cause the same sized carrier works wonders for my Senegal Parrot):

I wrote an article about how to modify this specific model cat carrier to suit a parrot. I like the fact that it has a top cage style door. It lets sunlight in better and makes it easier to take parrot in/out than side door. This is a good transport and temporary living cage for small parrots.

For walks and spending time outdoors, I think I would suggest the aviator harness instead so that the parrot can be fully out. You must still take precautions against predators but the bird can be pretty safe if you keep it near. Here is an article about how I trained the harness. Here are articles about having my parrots outside on harnesses:

We have an Avian Adventures "Poquito" hotel cage, which is plenty enough for Scooter to stay in for a weekend, and might work as a bedtime cage even for Scotty. It can be disassembled for storage pretty easily. However, it's not really suitable as a carrier, for that you want something more enclosed and not too big.

I'm considering a harness and our birds aren't even fully flighted. It would be nice to be able to take them out for walks without worrying about gusts of wind or huge surges of adrenaline.
