Adding a divider to a cage??

Postby CheekyandMalolo » Fri Sep 23, 2011 6:01 am

What're the chances of adding a divider to a dome top cage?
This is the cage :
Image
Could it be as easy as cutting some small gauge wire to size and fitting it in? There're feeders on both side, and the cage is big enough that half a cage would be big enough for one bird each. It's just that Rory and Tika are so in love with each other (in a very physical way) that it'd be nice to have them seperate without having them in completely seperate cages. And yes we could buy a cage with a divider but this cage is good already and most divided cages are HUGE!
Is it do-able? And what materials do I need to make the job happen?

haha liz

it could be more effort then whats worth it. and wont they get angry and annoyed if they cnt get busy?
but iv once heard someone say they seperate their birds with a perplex sheet. but that of course would mean they cant climb on that side or try play with each other
the only other way i can tink of is if u can get metal and weld it in place, but then thats perminant

Why do you want to seperate them? Don't you think that would cause emotional trama?

That cage is too small for a bird (or two) of that size as it is, I would definitely not put a divider in.
And if they love each other as much as you say, it would just be cruel to part them. :/
If they have eggs (even if they don't have a nest but lay them on the floor), remove them and replace them with plastic eggs.

I would keep them together too. As long as they are not having babies I would keep them together. Just take out anything resembling a nest and, like Zanizaila said, you could get fake eggs too. I have a male/female pair of cockatiels and a male/female pair of budgies that live together (not all four of them, in pairs) and they have never had babies. I would be extremely, extremely reluctant to separate them and would probably only do so if I had absolutely no other choice.

And Zanizaila, I loooove your signature! Is that a Meyer's? Where did you find those adorable pictures or did you make them yourself?

That cage is SO not too small for two GCCs. It's (approx.) 700w x 1200h x 500d. If you have a better look at that picture you can see the two of them sitting on a perch at the top of the cage, DIFINTELY not too small.

Thankyou for the comments of 'emotional trauma', while I don't think it would cause them too much emotional trauma I do agree that it may not achieve what I want it to achieve.

Well, you're free to do as you like. It's a bit small for two in my personal perspective. I'd have that size for one conure, but when it comes to cages, I take "the bigger the better" literally.

We'll likely upgrade to a bit bigger cage in the next few years, but quite seriously they really don't need a much bigger cage at all. They spend plenty of time out of it, and show no signs of needing more space.
You've got me intrigued now, does anyone else feel this cage is too small for two small (vet says they're small for their age) GCCs? Keeping in mind they spend a good chunk of time out each day and when they're in their cage they spend a lot of time simply preening each other, eating, sleeping or playing on one particular toy at a time, they don't spend much time at all playing around they cage itself and using the space they have. Apart from the odd wrestle on the floor of the cage.

I do have to say that it is a little small, and I find it awkward to put a divider in it too..

What about a double stacked cage? You could sell your current on on Craigslist.
