Secondary Cage

Postby ridmaster » Thu Feb 02, 2012 9:00 pm

I'm sorry if this has been asked, but I didn't find anything when searching.

I have an eclectus coming home at the end of the month. I've ordered a large cage to be her primary home on the middle floor of a our tri-level house. I want to put something downstairs where the office is so she can hang out with us when we're on our computers. My first thought was to put a playstand down there. However, I've been reading about the importance of giving your bird quiet, especially at night. Since the middle floor is where the kitchen, eating area, and home theater are I'm wondering if I should instead get a small cage to keep down there. The cage I had in mind is 18x18x25" internally. I was thinking she could hang out in there with the door open or on top of it and if we are going to watch an action movie at full volume or there are a lot of people over it could be a good retreat for her. We of course would not leave her in there during the day if we're out of the house, but just when needed.

Does this sound like a good idea? I'm prone to over thinking things so please tell me if I'm making this too complicated.

18x18 still sounds too small unfortunately, the ekkie should be able to fully extend his/her wings in thecage. However, the idea sounds good!

My birds don't like quiet. They want to be where the action is.

In case anyone else is curious, I emailed Carolyn at landofvos who seems to be well regarded in the eclectus world to get her thoughts on sleeping cage size. Here was her one sentence response.

"I've always thought an 18" by 18" wide by 24" high is just right."

Hope this helps.
