First report of their scavenging for sea shells [calcium!] was back in 1856!

Myrtle scavenging in my kitchen trash can became common. I have to keep a cardboard box on top of it. I was really grossed out the first time I saw her sitting on the can and chewing.
It is funny that they knew the shells had something they needed.

Hmmmm, I don't think that they actually KNEW the shells were made of calcium. Most likely, they liked the salty taste of them.
